  1. Also writing as Carolyn Hart.An accomplished master of mystery with 46 published books, Carolyn Hart is the creator of the highly acclaimed Henrie O,Death on Demand, and Bailey Ruth Raeburn series Her books have won multiple Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards Letter from Home 2003 , her standalone mystery set in Oklahoma, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize Her latest book is Dead by Midnight William Morrow HarperCollins, 2007 She is one of the founders of Sisters in Crime, an organization for women who write mysteries She lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma New Books Dead By Midnight Carolyn HartDEAD BY MIDNIGHT by Carolyn Hart On Sale March 29The police say suicide Annie Darling suspects murder Max is unconvinced until Annie follows a trail behind the dead woman s house.Annie unravels the mystery of a towel hidden at midnight in a gazebo, the interesting lack of fingerprints on a crystal mug, blood on a teenager s blue shirt, and the secret of a lovers tryst Max plunges deep into the woods to find incriminating evidence.Annie sets the perfect trap for a merciless killer, but her cell phone rings and Death is on the line.CarolynHartAnd for cat lovers DEAD BY MIDNIGHT by Carolyn HartI love to have fun when writing a mystery If I laugh, I think a reader will laugh In the Death on Demand series, I especially enjoy writing about Annie Darling s ditzy mother in law, Laurel Roethke Laurel is usually excited about a new interest, something that surprises and often confounds Annie. In Dead by Midnight, Laurel creates Cat Truth Posters, which she wants Annie to hang in the bookstore Annie thinks books should be the store s focus, but the posters enchant her. Each poster features a cat s photograph with a caption Here are three of the Cat Truth posters a silky furred, mitted, and bicolored Ragdoll stretched out on a red silk cushion, looking as comfy as Eva Longoria in a Hanes ad Go with the Flow.A rectangular muzzled, green eyed, cholocolate colored cat appeared as brooding as a Gothic hero Always Say Yes to Adventure a thick furred, piebald Siberian forest cat, its white front a brilliant contrast to a charcoal back and head Its face appeared almost angelic Always try a Smile First. And yes, one of the posters points to a killer.Fun for me and fun, I hope for readers

  2. Something Wicked , 1988, was awful A cat was killed In horror, we hold our breath, knowing demented crap is the reason for that label Animals aren t harmed even in that genre unless authors want us horrified I never consider it acceptable but in a mother F ing cozy mystery , in jealousy over someone a character was leaving anyway Trivial spite, at a cozy mystery town play The traditional victim takes chapters to appear, we don t regret who it is, and know the killer straight off On page 108, Car [...]

  3. Yuck Convoluted mystery with lots of references to better mysteries I hate this series, yet picked yet another of them up in search of a quick read Murder takes place during rehearsal for amateur production of Arsenic and Old Lace Lots of references to this as well Better to stick to reading the stories she mentioned Please don t let me read another one of these books.

  4. Third in the Death on Demand mystery series set in a bookstore specializing in mysteries and run by Annie Laurence on Broward s Rock Island in South Carolina. In 1989, Something Wicked won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Original in 1988, it won the Agatha Award for Best Novel. My TakeThere is a very Agatha Christie feel to this mystery, so it s understandable that it won an Agatha award I have to confess that Annie was very annoying in this story She takes everything so seriously Part of me [...]

  5. Character List view spoiler Something Wicked Death On Demand 3 Shane Petree ex surfer star is a total disaster He was having an affair with T.K s wife and teenaged daughter Shane s rich wife Sheridan is financing the play so they are stuck with the total jerk god awful house lovely on the outside, rotten on the inside Hunter Prentiss was a roistering, self made oil man, Sheridan s fatherSam Haznine, the famous Broadway director is a washed up director Tonelda Divine and she s going to be a great [...]

  6. Everyone including mystery bookstore owner Annie Lawrence loves Arsenic and Old Lace But something wicked is poisoning a local summer stock production as cast members stab each other in the back and props are sabotaged Worst of all, the star, aging Hollywood beach blanket hunk Shane Petree, butchers his lines while getting top billing in bed with wives and teenage daughters around town No wonder somebody wants to draw his final curtain A pompous prosecutor tries to pin a murder on Max, Annie s o [...]

  7. Just couldn t hold my interest.Since I don t normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here s the break down of how I rate my books1 star This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.2 stars This book was not very good, and I won t be reading any from the author.3 stars This book was ok, but I won t go out of my way to read , But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I d pick i [...]

  8. I really liked the first book in this series, but the second and this one fell flat for me.After the first book, Annie has become whiny and petulant She always seems to be crabbing about something and I found everything about her just irritating.I had hoped for a new favourite series, but this book proved that this won t be something I ll be sticking with.

  9. Not as good as the first 2, I don t know why, maybe I read it at the wrong time In any event, I will go on with the series because, being a bookoholic and the protagonist being a mystery bookstore owner just seems rightlol

  10. this book was slow moving not the usual action type I m used to it has a lot of description and the action waits until you are half way thru the book the characters are a bit confusing it might have been better to include a list of characters with something about them and who they played on stage this is the first book in this series that I have readmight not try another one.

  11. I love the Death On Demand seriesAnnie and Max Darling are a delightful couple The name dropping of all the great sleuths and mystery writers is filling out my reading list.

  12. I thought I had read all the books before Annie and Max get married but I missed this one Laurel is a hoot when she gets to planning things for them This book was a pleasure.

  13. Something Wicked, the third in the Death on a Demand series by Carolyn G Hart and winner of the Agatha Award for Best Novel of 1988, features Max and Annie during rehearsals for a community theater performance of the dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace The rehearsals seems the victim of either a curse or sabotage, unless it is both Frustratingly for the other actors in the show, the producer of the show has cast an aging former star in the role of Teddy Unfortunately, the actor, Shane, revuses to m [...]

  14. I wish I was familiar with Arsenic and Old Lace ah well Hart did a decent job of presenting the characters and basic plot points The hardest thing was keeping track of all the players Eugene and Arthur were the toughest for me to remember because they seemed so minor to the events.Basically, there are minor bothers that happen during the practice of this play chalk lines are erased, notices of practice are removed from their post, and cue cards are tampered with Then view spoiler one of the act [...]

  15. SOMETHING WICKED by Carolyn G Hart is 226 pages in paperback form This is 3 in Death On Demand Series featuring Annie Laurance.Brief Description A DEADLY THEATRICAL WHODUNIT COMES TO LIFEEveryone including mystery, bookstore owner Annie Laurance lovesArsenic and Old Lace But something wicked is poisoning a local summerstock production as cast members stab each other in the back and props are sabotaged Worst of all, the star, aging Hollywood beach blanket hunk Shane Petree, butchers his lines whi [...]

  16. This plot moved so slowly for me that I almost gave up on it, but the characters managed to hold my interest so I continued on It was not until the book was almost at the half way point when someone did in fact turn up dead I was beginning to wonder just what kind of murder mystery this could be where no one dies but I felt rewarded in the end for sticking with it A bunch of quirky characters are cast mates in the summer stock production of Arsenic and Old Lace, and until the promised murder tak [...]

  17. 3 of the Death on Demand seriesThis is my year to catch up on this series although it looks like I ll be continuing into 2014 I really like the mystery bookstore milieu, the island setting, the five pictures mystery puzzle in each novel, and, most of all, Annie Max, the main characters. What I could use a little less of is the over the top secondary characters such as Henny Brawley, Annie s best customer who likes to assist in the investigations by taking on the persona of various fictional detec [...]

  18. Well, at least Annie wasn t suspected for long in this one this time it was poor ole Max Sigh Isn t there another way to get plot tension besides putting your leading characters in jeopardy Community theater Arsenic and Old Lace a money hungry developer a lazy, washed up, surfer Hollywood Star alley cat wives bitchy teens election mongering prosecutors wedding plans Annie and Max general fun What I like about this series is that it s a nice romp with literary underpinnings literary underpinnings [...]

  19. Read for monograph In 1988, the Malice Domestic Awards were created The Agatha is given to the best novel and best first novel as well as a few other designations The first Agatha given for a best novel was to Hart s Something Wicked, part of the Death on Demand series. My favorite aspects of this series the setting is an island off of South Carolina Hart does a great job with description, enough so that I would love to see and possibly live on such an island, and I really have no interest in liv [...]

  20. It s up to Annie and Max to figure out why the summer stock version of Arsenic and Old Lace is having so many problems Things have been moved around, there was a dead cat in the window seat, and now one of their castmates is dead Granted, the aging surf picture star was causing a LOT of problems, not knowing his lines, messing around with both a mother and her daughter, just generally being a putz Which means that there are than a few suspects Including Max It seems the county prosecutor is abo [...]

  21. Something Wicked Death on Demand 3 by Carolyn Hart. The introduction of Max s mother and the upcoming wedding between the fabulously wealthy Max and hard working Annie are hilarious Annie and Max join the local summer theatre group and attempt to put on Arsenic and Old Lace When one of the main players is found murdered, Annie and Max must solve the crime The inclusion of the pompous Circuit Court Solicitor into the mix is so humorous Of course, he thinks Max is to blame I found this book not as [...]

  22. Annie runs a bookstore called Death On Demand In this book she s part of a theater group who is rehersing for Arsenic and Old Lace, when cue creepy music someone is murdered So who did it, and why To find out, read on.The book kept my interest but it didn t evoke much emotion I kept confusing the characters, probably because I wasn t that invested It s a good book for multi tasking light, not too emotional, something you can put on for back ground noise and enjoy without paying too close attenti [...]

  23. Hart is beginning to build on her first two books to give the reoccurring characters depth The introduction of Max s mother and the upcoming wedding between the fabulously wealthy Max and hard working Annie are hilarious Annie and Max join the local summer theatre group and attempt to put on Arsenic and Old Lace When one of the main players is found murdered whom everyone has a motive to kill , Annie and Max must solve the crime The inclusion of the pompous Circuit Court Solicitor into the mix [...]

  24. I enjoyed this much than the previous book This story was engaging from the beginning and I was invested in the outcome Max was obviously innocent I was surprised by the ending, I did not expect Sheridan and Carla to be working together I am not a fan of Posey what a pompus, sexist, jerk I am also not a fan of Laurel she is too flighty and ridiculous Aside from how irritated those characters made me I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

  25. This is the 3rd Death on Demand Book and, while very good as most of Ms Hart s series are, I found the characters annoying and verging on cliche I don t know which ones bothered me Annie, Henny, Laurel, or Max I also get tired of the one dimensional, stereotyped Southern law enforcers the myopic refusal to consider other points of view strikes me as implausible Despite this I do enjoy the series and have started another on Thank you, public library

  26. I was disappointed in this third book in the Death By Demand series Annie seemed really annoying to the point where I started to dislike her The story seemed to drag and I only continued to read it because I hate to not finish a book I don t know if I will continue with this series, probably not.

  27. Further adventures of my favorite bookstore owner I first read it years and years ago decided to re read the series from the beginning and, someday, maybe even catch up to where I left off It s been just long enough since I read it the first time that I didn t remember the story completely Definitely worth the re read

  28. Made me want to revisit Arsenic and Old Lace the old movie version Fun mystery, neat setting, great bookstore, but dialogue and vocabulary are so formal that it seems to keep the characters at arm length and two dimensional That said, I enjoy learning some new words and look forward to whatever new madness Max s mother comes up with next for the wedding of the century.

  29. It took me a bit to get into the rhythm of the author s writing stylebut once I did, it was a great whodunit, based out of a mystery book store I loved the references to the characters from the murder mystery classics.
