  1. Julie Klassen loves all things Jane Jane Eyre and Jane Austen A graduate of the University of Illinois, Julie worked in publishing for sixteen years and now writes full time Three of her books, The Silent Governess, The Girl in the Gatehouse, and The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, have won the Christy Award for Historical Romance She has also won the Midwest Book Award, the Minnesota Book Award, and Christian Retailing s BEST Award, and been a finalist in the Romance Writers of America s RITA Awards and ACFW s Carol Awards She blogs at inspiredbylifeandfiction.Julie and her husband have two sons and live in a suburb of St Paul, Minnesota.

  2. First posted on my blog, Legacy of a Writer.Julie Klassen is the 21st century s Jane Austen I knew she was good after reading The Apothocary s Daughter, but The Maid of Fairbourne Hall really blew me away Open this book and Klassen will transports you back to the early 1800s, in England, when upper class Margaret Macy suddenly finds her life altered to that of a lowly housemaid. The first character that struck me the strongest and grabbed my attention was wild mannered and dashingly good looking [...]

  3. I m not one for the fangirl OMG YOU HAVE TO READ THIS stuff, but Julie Klassen s books have tempted me to engage in some literary peer pressure It s not a preachy inspirational, trust me I was drawn to her books by the intriguing titles, beautiful covers and well written blurbs, and all four of her previous novels exceeded my expectations I ve read them all several times, and I still can t decide which one to add to my Desert Island Keepers.I had The Maid of Fairbourne Hall on my yay coming soon [...]

  4. This is the first book of Julie Klassen that I have read and it will not be my last I did not think I could enjoy and get as involved in a book as I did with this one I want to say one thing before giving my review of the book Don t give up on the book The book is a slow start and I was myself tempted to put it down and skip it I am so glad that I did not and continued reading on The story gets better and better and really does a nice job tying everything up at the end The story takes you back t [...]

  5. I enjoyed this one much than the last couple of Julie Klassen novels I ve read It may be because the heroine wasn t being punished for being a fallen woman Thankfully, this one was much less heavy and preachy, not so full of judgment and condemnation At the most, some Bible verses and a few quick prayers were all that reminded me that this was a Christian romance, thank God I do like to read a good romance that focuses on the emotional aspect of love rather than sex scenes, but also doesn t pr [...]

  6. I loved this book This is the second book I ve read by Julie Klassen and I ve loved both books so very much Julie Klassen is my new favorite author I was sad when I reached the last page of this book and immediately thought, I need to re read this book again some day I loved reading about these characters I loved reading as Margaret Macy s character developed and changed as she became the person she was in the end, as well as the others who became better and better as the story unfolded I have a [...]

  7. Continuing on my Klassen splurgel 400 pages in about 24 hours It s very hard to put down one of her books This one was so enjoyable, and the historical research was great And I loved Margaret Nora and the hero so much

  8. After hearing a private conversation between her step father and his nephew, in which they plotted to make her marry the young man in order to steal her inheritance, Margaret Macy decides to flee and wait for her upcoming birthday, when she will get that inheritance and will be able to live on her own With the help of her former maid, Margaret becomes a housemaid in the home of Nathaniel Upchurch, a man she once rejected because she wanted to win his brother s love Will she be safe in Nathaniel [...]

  9. Margaret Macy must escape her home to protect her virtue, inheritance, and future Her step father has ordered his scoundrel nephew to court, woo, and even compromise if necessary his step daughter, Margaret, in order to force marriage between them and obtain control of her inheritance With no funds readily available and no family nearby, Margaret disguises herself as a maid and leaves her family and home In just a few months she will be old enough to claim her inheritance and can come out of hid [...]

  10. I ve had a really good reading streak lately I ve read some GREAT books I ve been depending on my blogging friends to recommend books before requesting them, and it s made my reading time SO much better Thanks y all I d already read from several bloggers that this book reminded them of Jane Austen So, while reading this book, I was in the Jane Austen mindset I enjoyed this book so much that if it wasn t for the huge pile of books I need to read, it would have been a perfect opportunity to give [...]

  11. This book was a slow start for me I wasn t sure I was going to be able to finish it I am glad I persevered because it was a really great book.

  12. In the fall of 2008 I first discovered Julie Klassen in her debut novel Lady of Milkweed Manor and fell in love Pretty much as a matter of fact many things I said about that novel still hold true again to this one Upon finishing this novel, I sigh in complete contentment This is near one of the best novels I have ever had the opportunity to fall deep within the pages and stay for a while. From beginning to end I had my opinions of how things should go, with the slight twists and turns I never had [...]

  13. I have collected all of Julie Klassen s books, and I have to say, that this is one of the best This book swept me away to another time and place, and I was so sad when the book ended, because it meant I had to leave I love Regency era England, and the descriptions in her books make me feel like I am there I really got acquainted with Maidstone and Fairbourne Hall and the characters I like the fact that characters who are not main characters are still rounded and developed Excellent book, excelle [...]

  14. One of Klassen s better novels, Fairbourne Hall is a sweet Regency Romance with a faintly Christian tone A well to do somewhat spoiled young woman is forced to flee her home when her step father threatens to stoop to sordid means to force her marriage to his ne er do well nephew, in order to gain access to her inheritance She seeks to survive by assuming the role of a maid below stairs, in what she belatedly learns is the home of an old acquaintance. As many reviewers have noted, the novel has a [...]

  15. So far I have enjoyed reading the majority of Julie Klassen s historical romances This one was no exception The concept intrigued me from the outset, and the way the author pulled me in kept me reading was well done At first the heroine wasn t very likable, but the author changed that by putting Margaret in a very humbling situation Then the hero wasn t very likable, but once I was inside his head that all changed as well I ve never read a book where I disliked both main characters right off the [...]

  16. The plot was soooo entruiging and I just couldn t stop turning the pages, waiting impatiently for where Nathaniel and Nora Margaret finally CAME TOGETHER Some bits were well, boring, I thought, but all in all, I liked it a lot 3.5 stars.

  17. I blame my recent lack of adequate sleep and lack of focus at work on this book Not only did it have me pushing it when it came to bedtime, the next day at work I kept thinking about lunch aka reading time and what was going to happen I should have known this was going to happen, because that s what happens when you read a Julie Klassen novel. And it was definitely no different with The Maid of Fairbourne Hall. And I ve decided she s the Jane Austen of today. And no starting a sentence with and.I [...]

  18. Writing a good regency must be a great deal complicated than it looks upon first appearance But when done in the correct and proper manner, good regency shines like the silver by which Nora polished belowstairs in Fairbourne Hall. For anyone who has read even just a little of this period of fiction, one would not expect a rich society girl to one day be attending a masquerade ball and the next scrubbing a chamber pot But as crazy as that sounds, the plot of the story perfectly supports Margaret [...]

  19. The Maid of Fairbourne Hall is a delight The story initially plunges the reader into a swift river and it doesn t take long for the current to change, transforming Miss Margaret Macy into Nora, the maid of Fairbourne Hall While the pace lessens off and on, the intrigue continues and historical details, as well as some back story, flow expertly throughout the pages. And let s not forget the romance When the heroine finds herself in the home of a spurned suitor and a would be love interest, some sp [...]

  20. that was great Easily in my top 3 favorite Julie Klassen s I loved the characters and highly relate to them I wish I could give this book then 5 stars It Also reminds me of a Cinderella retelling even though it doesn t have a lot of the elements just the feel of it And I LOVE Cinderella retellings

  21. eeeeexcellent historical fiction light on the angst, light on the religion 4.5 stars should be a hit with downton abbey fans, as it features a lot of the upstairs downstairs manor house details pg13 light green for a tiny bit of peril, some ruination, a duel, and a boat burning

  22. A tale of a headstrong young lady of high standing who when her freedom, inheritance and personal safety is under attack in her own home by her ghastly stepfather and his nephew flees London in the hopes of escaping her past and her fears, disguised as a maid Due to unlikely circumstances, she finds herself accepting a position at Fairbourne Hall the very place wherein live two brothers who have both played major roles in Margaret s past Lewis, the sought after rogue and Nate, the dark, headstro [...]

  23. Also found here christianbookshelfreviewsBefore I share what I thought about The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, I have to mention that Julie Klassen is one of my mom s favorite authors she s read all of Julie s books and when she saw that I had this book for review she immediately took it from me and had to read it first And guess what My mom loved this book from the first sentence on literally While Julie Klassen is not a new author to my mom, she is to me this is the first book I ve read of hers and [...]

  24. I enjoyed reading Edenbrooke so much that I felt I should give a try for other romance that falls under this genre I picked this one up after searching clean romance tag This is the first book that I read from this author.Maid of Fairbourne Hall outlined the story of Margaret who ran away from home to escape his step father s arrangement ended up being a maid at one of the places that she thought she wouldn t be Fairbourne Hall There resides her former suitor, Nathaniel Margaret used to reject h [...]

  25. This is it I am SO going to buy every Julie Klassen book there is this year It s officially on my 2012 to do list.Where do I even start This book was beyond amazing it was amazingly amazing, amazing The whole lady in disguise thing was really intriguing, to me at least I m a lover of disguises DMargaret or should I say Nora was a very strong female character I mean, running away from home, to escape from the greedy hands of a stepfather and his puppet nephew, to go work as a maid somewhere That [...]

  26. I enjoyed this book It was fun to see Margaret s life as a maid, and the dream kiss was lovely However, I had some major complaints about it, too First of all, I felt that the main character wasn t portrayed consistently She was spoiled and prissy but also carefree and funny She was impulsive and thoughtless, but also very thoughtful about other people s feelings She was a proper young woman who also loved to ride horses and frolic about the countryside with her dog You get the idea I couldn t g [...]

  27. This kind of reminded me of Jane Austen s Persuasion, with a twist There is a bit of a lost love story going on, which I m always a sucker for Margaret flees her home one evening and finds employment in the home of a man who once proposed to her She wears a disguise and becomes a housemaid I liked the changes Margaret goes through during her story She starts off a bit pampered and kind of self centered, but as the story progresses and she starts to actual work her personality softens and she beg [...]

  28. I love the amount of history I know I will get when reading a Klassen novel I love the deep characters and the twisting plots I think this is my favorite of all her novels I loved Downton Abby and loved being pulled back into the world of servants and the upper class But this one had a great twist with the spoiled rich girl learning a great life lesson.I was disappointed at first that the love interests got little time together but by the end the tension that she had built threw out the novel wa [...]

  29. This was a well written and entertaining Christian historical romance I really like how much the protagonist matured throughout the story and how she dealt with her difficult circumstances, some of which were rather amusing Even though it took me awhile to warm up to the story and characters, I ended up really enjoying the book.
